What is Locast?

Locast is a flexible and cutting-edge location-based platform that combines distributed Web and Mobile applications that create hyperlocal and highly-connected experiences. Locast superimposes layers of collectively generated information within the physical space.

This augmentation of real space is democratically chosen by Locast users, in real time, as they participate in the content-generation process. Each interaction within the system can be viewed by people engaging in the physical space, and those participating online. The interconnection between content, spaces and people is simultaneous and ubiquitous. Locast leverages location-based services in order to improve context-awareness - offering a set of tools to recognize location, improve navigation and extend the amount of accessible, quality information.

The Locast platform is designed to be easily paired with external hardware such as wearable devices, environmental sensors and other highly-specific electronics that improve its potential through add-on features. An Open-API philosophy makes Locast an ideal platform to be implemented in a number of different contexts such as: civic media, tourism, civic engagement, on-site learning, urban games, and many more.
